Tariff headlines and navigating economic uncertainty

March 10, 2025 · Bob Griffin

Markets in Newfoundland and Labrador

Tariff news moves markets because it moves the story people tell about growth, inflation, and who pays. It is a poor reason, on its own, to abandon a well-built plan. The households that get hurt in uncertain years are usually the ones who were never fully insured, never quite funded the TFSA, and then sold the RRSP at the bottom because the evening news was loud.

Our working method is dull on purpose. Revisit cash needs for the next eighteen months. Confirm disability and life coverage still match the mortgage and the people. Rebalance rather than rebuild. Use contributions (RRSP, TFSA, RESP) as the thing you can control, instead of trying to time a headline.

Newfoundland’s economy will feel a tariff fight through fish, energy, and construction long before it shows up as a graph on a national broadcast. If your work is exposed, the insurance conversation and the cash-reserve conversation come first. The portfolio conversation comes second.
